Around 100 participants from 23 countries gathered in Turin, Italy from 26 to 28 September 2016 to take part in the 2nd UNI-SET Energy Clustering Event. Entitled "Universities in the Energy Transition: Focus on Energy Efficient Systems and Nuclear Safety," the event was organised by EUA and KU Leuven, which represents universities in KIC-InnoEnergy.

The second in a series of six  Energy Clustering Events (ECEs) scheduled in 2016 and 2017, the event hosted by the Politecnico di Torino aimed to address from a university perspective the challenges in energy research and education in the fields of energy efficiency and nuclear safety.

One of the main outcomes of the event was the very positive feedback received from the participants on the “Roadmap for European Universities in Energy”, a general document developed by EUA and the UNI-SET consortium that outlines ways forward for universities to coordinate their contributions to energy and climate challenges. The feedback will be incorporated into the roadmap and the final version will be published in the coming weeks. Participants also had the opportunity to provide comments on thematic Pan-European action agendas in the fields of energy efficiency and nuclear safety which will come out during the ECE series.

EUA President Rolf Tarrach emphasised at the event that energy should be considered as an overarching topic when addressing cross-sectorial challenges in the 21st century. Along the main lines, Professor Enrico Macii, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at the Politecnico di Torino, highlighted the importance of supporting the development of multidisciplinary Master and Doctorate programmes in the energy field at the institutional level.

The crucial role of universities as key players in EU energy policy was recognised and further endorsed by speakers from the Directorate-General (DG) Energy, DG Research and Innovation and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (EC). The European Platform of Universities in Energy Research & Education (EUA-EPUE) is leading the contribution of universities in the framework of the SET-Plan and Energy Union. Fourteen EUA-EPUE input papers, including three papers in the fields of energy efficiency in industry, in building and nuclear safety, have provided the university perspective to the ongoing SET-Plan consultations on strategic targets and priorities.

The 3rd UNI-SET Energy Clustering Event will take place in Bucharest from 21 to 23 November 2016 and will address the topics of smart energy systems and communities. For more information, please click here.
